The main road accident indicators have been certified since 2013 by the French Public Statistics Authority ; find here the 2018 data for the certified indicators.
The French Public Statistics Authority ensures that the design, production and dissemination of productions resulting from the use, for general information purposes, of data collected by administrations, are carried out in compliance with the principles of professional independence, objectivity, impartiality, relevance and data quality.
The certification of key indicators is essential for ONISR, because it recognises the essential work of an entire network of stakeholders (police forces, regional or departmental observatories, road managers, Cerema), who ensure the most objective possible vision of the situation and to challenge drivers' personal feelings.
Thus, in 2013, ONISR requested the certification of the main accident indicators by the French Public Statistics Authority (ASP). The Certification Committee, which now examines applications in support of the Authority, did not exist at that time. The first ASP notice was published in the Official Journal on 18 June 2013.
On 27 November 2019, the ASP certified a 5-year renewal of the approval for the main accident indicators from the BAAC database (injury accidents recorded by police forces on the scene) :
Geographical scope :
France mainland, Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Reunion Island, and Mayotte from 2012
Annual accident indicators:
- The annual number of road traffic injury accidents (A),
- The number of fatal accidents per year (AM),
- The annual number of people killed (T),
- The annual number of people injured (B),
These annual indicators are broken down by :
- calendar (time, day of the week, month, day/night period)
- atmospheric conditions
- environment: motorway/non-motorway roads outside built-up areas/non-motorway roads and streets within built-up areas areas formerly known as "motorways, rural areas, urban areas".
- type of collision
- road user category (pedestrian, cyclist, moped, motorcyclist, motorcyclist, motorist, commercial vehicle user, heavy goods vehicle user, public transit user, etc.)
- age group
- age of driving licence
- In the presence of at least one driver with an alcohol level above the legal limit
Indicators related to victims (killed or injured) may cross-reference each other:
- Environment / road user
The annual ATB indicators are compared to the residential and road traffic context:
- Relative to the number of inhabitants, data from INSEE (estimated resident population on 1 January)
- Relative to the number of kilometres travelled, or billions of kilometres travelled by vehicles.
